About usSince its creation in 1997, BIOBASE's core business is to maintain and distribute databases

on gene expression regulation that have been originally developed during publicly funded projects at GBF, Research Group Bioinformatics. The main product is TRANSFAC®, a database on eukaryotic transcription factors (TF), their genomic binding sites and DNAbinding profiles (PWMs). TRANSFAC® is accompanied by the sequence analysis tools MATCH™ and PATCH™. TRANSCompel® is a collection of experimentally proven composite regulatory elements. TRANSPATH® is a signal transduction pathways database. It comes along with the tools PathwayBuilder™ and ArrayAnalyzer™. PathwayBuilder™ provides the possibility to compose signalling paths, pathways and networks out of the fragmented information stored in the database as individual molecules and reactions, and to visualise them. ArrayAnalyzer™ is devoted to the analysis of data coming from microarray experiments. BIOBASE has proven expertise in the prediction of binding sites for TFs, and also in the analysis of data coming from experimental laboratories. DNA sequence analysis has been performed for several groups of functionally related genes, for instance cell cycle genes, genes induced upon immune response, Ah-receptor regulated genes. After acquisition of the Proteome databases from Incyte in January 2005, BIOBASE also owns one of the most comprehensive data resources on mammalian, yeast and Caenorhabditis proteomes. BIOBASE received in October 2004 the award of the 5th place in the Deloitte & Touche Fast 50 Germany. Among life science companies in Germany, BIOBASE was the fastest growing enterprise. Already the year before, BIOBASE was awarded the 10th fastest growing

company in Germany.
ContributionsHigh quality manual annotation of project relevant data into already

existing databases TRANSFAC®, TRANSPATH®, TRANSCompel®. Providing the data collected to the community. DNA sequence analysis: search for putative binding sites for TFs. Development of software for the reconstruction of a gene regulatory network (transcription network)

from the microarray experiments.
