Prostanoids, comprised of prostaglandins and thromboxanes, are oxygenated metabolites of C20 polyunsaturated fatty acids (Cha et al. 2006). The precursors are arachidonic acid (AA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), released from membrane phospholipids by phospholipase A2 (PLA2). The activation of PLA2 is the first step in the arachidonic acid cascade. The formation and accumulation of the products of this cascade leads to various physiological responses: stimulation of JNK and MAPK, changes in transmembrane signalling (Hernandez et al. 2002), formation of free radicals and lipid hydroperoxide products (Muralikrishna et al. 2006).
